21st October

Sixteen of us gathered in St. Helen's Heritage Centre for the introductory meeting of the Ashby u3a Play Readers. After a round of introductions, we read extracts from The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde, and from Dylan Thomas's Under Milk Wood. On this occasion, we read each piece several times, partly to get the flavour of reading plays in a group for the first time; and partly so that everybody had a chance to read. Everyone enjoyed the readings, and it was fascinating to hear how different readers brought a new dimension to each character, bringing the written words to life. Theatre without having to learn words!

We went on to discuss how to continue with the group. We considered a number of possibilities, including perhaps setting up two smaller groups, but finally we agreed unanimously that we would continue to meet as a single large group from 2pm to 4pm on the third Tuesday of each month in St Helens Heritage Centre. To help cover the cost of refreshments and room hire, we agreed a Meeting Contribution of £5.

Our next meeting will be Tuesday, 17th November 2026. I'm still going through the list of plays which members were kind enough to suggest — watch this space!

We regret that Tuesday isn’t ideal for some folk who replied to our initial invitation, but should you find yourself unexpectedly free one Tuesday, do please join us. We’d also be delighted to welcome new members, but please let Trevor know if you plan to come so he can set out enough chairs!

Thanks for a fantastic first act!

With best wishes,
Trevor Jordan
