Poetry Reading

We aim to get together to read, enjoy and discuss poetry. We meet on the third Thursday of the month at 2.30 pm.

The poetry group had a very enjoyable August meeting concluding our look at poetry written specifically by women.

Louise Gluck, an elusive writer, provoked a very interesting discussion as it is possible to read her poem 'Parable' in many ways. We spent some time looking at Gillian Clarke's skilful interweaving of the political, religious and down to earth in 'A Difficult Birth' and we also enjoyed 'Creel' by Scottish poet Kathleen Raine and its very visual description. It linked well with UA Fanthorpe's 'Atlas Revisited' and the burdens and responsibilities a lot of women carry. Wendy Cope's 'Rondeau Redoublé’ was a fun, light-hearted contrast. We finished with Maya Angelou's triumphant 'Still I Rise' which resonated strongly with the group.

Our next meeting will be on September 17th when we'll be looking at poems or poets we want to promote. If anyone is interested in joining us, please get in touch.
