We aim to get together to read, enjoy and discuss poetry. We meet on the third Thursday of the month at 2.30 pm.

The group spent two productive meetings looking at poetry concerned with war and conflict which provoked some heartfelt and absorbing discussion. We spent a lot of time on Auden’s poem ‘September 1, 1939’, raising some important and still relevant questions.

Tanya’s choices of poems written in response to conflict in Sarajevo/Bosnia and Czechoslovakia were new to all of us and very worthwhile of our time. We also looked at writing by Heaney, Charles Causley, Simon Armitage, Primo Levi and Herbert Reed and I think we all felt that this theme had been a very meaningful and valuable choice.

In July we will be looking at poetry written by female writers. If anyone else would like to join us, please get in touch.
