The gardening group made a self-drive visit to Planters Garden Centre nr. Junction 10 M42. We pre-booked a buffet lunch and talk by Mr Gerald Ingram, the founder of the Planter's Garden Centre chain. He told us that he didn't want to continue the farming tradition of his parents and grandparents, but growing plants was in his blood. He went to university to study business management and to the delight of his parents he set up a small business selling Christmas trees from the roadside beside their farm. This proved a successful venture and Gerald created a very small nursery which grew and grew. He now owns sites at Tamworth, Bretby and also Garden King nr. Burton upon Trent. He brought a selection of plants into our private room to show us and discuss growth habits and where about to plant them in an average garden.
We had our buffet before the talk and it was a lovely, tasty selection of food including sandwiches, hot potato wedges, salad and cakes.
Following the talk we had ample time to ask questions, browse around the garden centre, revisit the café and return home when we were ready.
